What's Going On?

Dear St Luke’s Family and Friends,

As you may know our faithful servant, Timothy Elston, has been making plans to start his journey into the priesthood. After many pre-qualification tasks and diocesan requirements, he has been accepted into seminary.

Dr. Elston will begin a Masters of Divinity program at Bexley-Seabury in Chicago on August 29th. This is an on-line institution which will require minimal travel allowing him to remain in Newberry to continue to support St. Lukes. His ultimate goal is to become an ordained Episcopal Priest with hopes of supporting small, rural churches in a more formal capacity.

Timothy’s journey will last several years. Timothy has been awarded a 50% scholarship by the seminary for the fall and spring semester of 2026-27. The Mission committee has unanimously agreed to support Timothy on this endeavor, with your help. Please prayerfully consider what financial support you can contribute for this coming scholastic year. A written pledge or contributions designated for Timothy’s tuition can be mailed to the church or placed in the offering plate. Additionally, we will be discussing what fundraisers we can initiate for Timothy’s out of pocket expenses.

Timothy has served the parishioners of St. Lukes for several years as Senior Warden and steadfastly conducted services for us twice a month. Timothy and Annette have been a blessing to this church in their faithful shepherding of all of us - we need to return that in kind and reach out in faith to assist them to our fullest ability.

God’s Peace,
St. Luke’s Mission Committee

Our Ministries

Ministry at St. Luke’s is part of our corporate as well as personal missions. While we have specific ministries that our Episcopal Men, Episcopal Churchwomen, and the Daughters of the King choose as their own, many individuals at St. Luke’s have very quiet ministries: the ministry of hospitality, or prayer, or service to others.

Nov. 1, 2025 Annual Bazaar

Every fall, the Episcopal Church Women of St. Luke's hold their annual bazaar. While it's true that preparations begin much earlier, figuring out who will make what, bring what, and do what.

It's a lot of work, and we have generous women who build relationships, enjoy the fellowship, work hard, and cherish the opportunity to support the programs our Bazaar helps.

Won't you join us?

(And let me tell you--ECW women can cook!).

Blessing of the Pets

If you know our priest, you know an animal lover. In fact, pretty much everyone at St. Luke's is an animal lover--cats, dogs, and who knows what else!

It's no surprise then that St. Luke's blesses the pets. Every year, on or about October 5, which the feat of St. Francis, we gather outside to , guardians and pets together for a blessing..

From Our Priest

St. Luke's is blessed to have Father Slaven Manning as our shared priest.

Father Manning, a Texan, has over three decades in the Priesthood. Fr. Manning is a Nashotah House Theological Seminary graduate who was ordained a priest in 1987. During his career he has worked in IT during a Sabbatical, and he's been a bi-vocational priest until 2015, when he returned to the priesthood fulltime.

Since 2015, he has served multiple churches and we are delighted that we can participate in his shared ministry.

Fr. Manning is the priest for both St. John's, Winnsboro and St. Luke's, Newberry.

Daughters

of the King

The Mission of The Order is the extension of Christ’s Kingdom through Prayer, Service and Evangelism.

According to the DOK website, "The Order of the Daughters of the King® is an order for women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church, churches in communion with it, or churches in the historic episcopate but not in communion with it. Our membership currently includes women in the Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran (ELCA), and Roman Catholic churches."

Since 1871, the National Episcopal Church Women, ECW, have championed women’s rights and the Christian foundation of God and family. They are a ministry of the Episcopal Church and celebrate that Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Their women’s ministry and children’s programs feed, educate, and provide community grants around the world.
